SFM Engineering Partners with Ulster University-led Smart Manufacturing Data Hub to Boost Energy Efficiency in Steel Fabrication with the Digital Innovation Fund

SMDH Consortium partners Manufacturing NI and MEGA contribute to manufacturing energy efficiency in SFM Engineering.

Keady, County Armagh – SFM Engineering, a leader in steel fabrication and manufacturing, has significantly improved its energy efficiency through a collaboration with the Ulster University-led Smart Manufacturing Data Hub (SMDH). This partnership, supported by the SMDH Digital Innovation Fund (DIF) from Innovate UK, enabled SFM to install advanced energy monitoring equipment at their 80,000 sq. ft. facility, resulting in substantial cost savings and operational improvements.

Tackling Rising Energy Costs with SMDH Data Insights

As energy costs continue to rise, SFM sought to reduce operational expenses while improving resource efficiency in line with its sustainability and net-zero goals. By engaging with the Smart Manufacturing Data Hub’s Digital Innovation Fund, SFM explored digital technologies that could optimise energy management. The data-driven approach allowed SFM to increase operational efficiency by 15-20% and achieve significant cost reductions.

The Role of the Digital Innovation Fund (DIF)

The project was made possible by SFM's successful application to the SMDH Digital Innovation Fund, which provided the necessary financial support to scale up their energy monitoring capabilities. The funding enabled SFM to deploy 30 energy-monitoring sensors throughout their facility, integrated into a comprehensive Energy Management System. These sensors provided real-time data on electricity usage, allowing SFM to track energy patterns and make strategic decisions to optimise their resource consumption.

Successes for SFM Engineering - driven by the Digital Innovation Fund

- A 15-20% increase in energy efficiency across the facility.

- Significant savings in energy costs, particularly through optimised compressor usage.

- Enhanced productivity through streamlined operations and reduced downtime.

- A shift to a smart manufacturing model, empowering SFM to operate more competitively, resiliently, and sustainably.

The project marked a turning point for SFM Engineering, demonstrating the power of digital transformation in the manufacturing sector. By transitioning from traditional manufacturing practices to a data-driven approach, SFM is now better positioned for long-term growth and profitability, while contributing to environmental sustainability.

Key Statistics

- Energy Efficiency Increase: 15-20%
