Anglia Labels is a family-owned, self-adhesive label manufacturer in East Anglia. Established in 1980, they are experts in bespoke label printing, utilising both flexographic and digital technologies. Situation
Anglia Labels worked with SMDH to build on a previous analysis project that summarised business data captured in spreadsheets. They required deeper insights into production metrics such as press running speeds, job costs by customer and label type, and dispatch performance. Specifically, they sought to analyse how much each job costs to produce, including material combinations and colour usage, as well as tracking the time between job order and dispatch dates.
SMDH was tasked with cleaning and processing these data to provide refined, actionable insights, presented in a user-friendly dashboard. This dashboard would allow Anglia Labels to better understand their operational performance, particularly in terms of customer profitability, production efficiency, and delivery times.
Solution
After data cleaning and preprocessing, SMDH provided a dashboard that visualised key areas including job costs by customer, press and material, lead times, and dispatch efficiency.
Key insights showed the most profitable customers and highlighted potential improvement areas, such as job delays or production inefficiencies.
The interactive nature of the dashboard enabled Anglia Labels to filter and analyse specific customers or production presses for better decision-making. Outliers in the data, like inconsistencies with certain customer records, were also identified, prompting further investigation.
Successes
The project resulted in a user friendly, interactive dashboard that gave Anglia Labels clear insights into their data. By visualising job costs, customer delivery times, and press performance, they were able to identify key areas of improvement. Importantly, Anglia Labels acknowledged manual data entry errors, which led them to invest in a new Management Information System (MIS) to automate data collection and improve accuracy. The success of this project will be compounded by comparing current insights with those generated from MIS data, with potential future collaborations to deepen their digital transformation.
